Voice memos are everywhere: iPhone's Voice Memos app, Android's Recorder, WhatsApp voice notes, Telegram audio messages — we capture more audio than ever. But audio is hard to search, share as text, or feed into other tools. This guide shows exactly how to convert voice memos to text from any mobile source, for free.

    Quick Start

Export your voice memo → Upload to TalkToTextly → Get your text. Works with any voice memo format from any app.

    iPhone Built-in Transcription (iOS 17+)

Apple added on-device transcription in iOS 17. In the Voice Memos app, tap a recording and look for a transcript tab. This is English-only and requires newer iPhone models. For other languages or older devices, TalkToTextly gives better results.

Open WhatsApp and find the voice note you want.

    2

Press and hold the voice note bubble → tap Share.

    Upload to talktotextly.com and transcribe.

From WhatsApp / Telegram Voice Notes (Android)

WhatsApp and Telegram both store voice note files locally on Android:

    WhatsApp Voice Notes Location

    Internal Storage / Android / media / com.whatsapp / WhatsApp / Media / WhatsApp Voice Notes /

Files are in .opus format. TalkToTextly supports .opus natively.

    Telegram Voice Notes Location

Internal Storage / Telegram / Telegram Audio /

Files are in .ogg format. TalkToTextly supports .ogg natively.

    Using TalkToTextly Directly on Mobile

You don't have to transfer files to a computer. TalkToTextly works on mobile browsers too:

    1

Open Chrome or Safari on your phone.

    2

    Navigate to talktotextly.com.

    3

Tap the upload area and select your voice memo from Files (iOS) or Files app (Android).

    4

    Select language and tap Transcribe.

    5

Copy the transcript or share it directly from your phone.

Note: Processing is slower on mobile devices due to CPU limitations. A 5-minute voice memo may take 2–3 minutes on a mid-range phone vs. 30 seconds on a laptop.

Tips for Better Voice Memo Transcription

Hold the phone closer to your mouth

Most phone microphones are good enough, but distance matters. Hold the mic 15–30cm from your mouth for best clarity.

    Avoid recording in windy conditions

Wind is the enemy of voice memos. Even light breezes cause low-frequency rumble that hurts accuracy.

    Speak at a moderate pace

Very fast speech or mumbling reduces accuracy. A natural, slightly deliberate pace works best.

    Use a quiet room

Kitchen appliances, traffic noise, and background TV all reduce accuracy significantly.
